Homemade Teething Rusk for sore gums
My gorgeous niece is teething, so I casually mentioned teething rusks to my sister-in-law… only to find out she hadn’t seen them! A quick Google search later, and it looks like they’ve been discontinued, in Australia at least. 🤯
I remember using them when my kids were teething, so I went looking for a recipe and gave it a go. It was surprisingly super easy—only a handful of pantry ingredients needed. I used a small blender, but a food processor would work just as well.
Here’s what you need:
✔️ 100g rolled oats
✔️ 110g mashed banana
✔️ 1 tbsp melted butter
✔️ A tiny splash of vanilla extract
✔️ A sprinkle of cinnamon
How to make them:
1️⃣ Blend the oats into fine powder.
2️⃣ Mix in the mashed banana, melted butter, vanilla, and cinnamon in the blender.
3️⃣ Roll into little logs (~1.5cm diameter).
4️⃣ Bake at 160°C for 40 minutes, then check for firmness. If they’re still soft or crumbly, bake for another 5-10 minutes.
Firmness Matters!
The recipe (from MJ and Hungrymen) originally calls for 40 minutes of baking. I checked mine after 40 minutes, let them cool, and tested by pressing with my thumb and index finger. Make sure they didn’t crumble or break apart easily—because a teething rusk needs to be firm to be safe and not become a choking hazard. If you find yours still not firm enough, pop them back in the oven to cook a bit longer (5 mins) & test for firmness again once they cooled down.
I wrapped them individually to keep them fresh (and firm). The rusk will soften and melt when chewed on by baby. If the rusk softens or crumbles, please remove them. And of course, always supervise your baby at all time while they’re using it.
